Vehicle traffic to return to downtown Memphis’ Main Street?
I saw a story on the news last night about returning vehicle traffic to Main Street, but didn’t really hear it all, did a google search on it today to find out more. According to an article in the Memphis Business Journal, the center city commission is considering once again allowing vehicle traffic on main, primarily to boost exposure to businesses on Main.
I don’t like the idea. I hate to sound like a pessimist, but I doubt that they will be capable of working out a system that doesn’t screw up both the trolleys and vehicle traffic.
The article mentions that the number of pedestrian malls in the US has dropped from 200+ to 20-30. Isn’t that another compelling reason to keep it? I’ve actually read a lot of blogs/reviews/articles that cite the trolleys as a downtown Memphis favorite. Why throw that away?
