Text:

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - About 150 hurricane evacuees with special medicals needs or small children are concerned about unsanitary conditions and a lack of air conditioning and showers at the Ed Rice Community Center.

“I’m kinda worried about overcrowding, worried about central air and the bathroom facilities,” evacuee Carrie Gilliland said.

Some evacuees said not enough is being done to help them, but officials said they’re doing the best they can to accomodate them.

“It does overwhelm us when we get an influx of people,” said Shelby County Sheriff’s Dept. Spokesman Steve Shular. “When we have that many people all in one space, that can drum up a lot of trash and can lead to some problems like we’ve seen yesterday with the plumbing. But make no mistake…we want to make sure if there’s a concern, it’s dealt with.”

Evacuee Rhonda Turner says her main concerns are dirty bathrooms with no showers. “No showers, the bathroom is awful, roaches in my Kool-Aid and they tell me I can’t get a better place to stay.”

But Shular said crews already fixed a plumbing problem at the shelter, and hot portable showers have been ordered and are on the way. They’ve also repaired the air conditioning, he said.

Anyone with questions or concerns about a shelter can call the Emergency Operations Center at (901) 515-2525.

This is NOT good enough for free! Where is my better free shit? No central air? WHAT THE FUCK!?

From WMC TV Five:

Evacuees fleeing the Gulf Coast arrived at the Amtrak station in Memphis around 10:45 Saturday night. The Tennessee Air National Guard is helping to place them in local shelters.
Several thousand evacuees are expected to flee to Tennessee in the wake of Hurricane Gustav.
Evacuee Bernell Vultz says he’s happy to be out of harm’s way, safe and sound at Cummings Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis.
“The church is always going to get blessed by the lord, as they open their days and let everybody come in,” he said.
But Vultz is worried about his property back home in Louisiana. “I just hope my house is still there when I get there.”
Nearly 60 volunteers from the Cummings Church congregation spent Saturday preparing to welcome evacuees like Vultz.
Kevin Faulkner says the church expects to provide shelter for at least 120 evacuees, and that means making sure all the necessary supplies are in place.
“Blankets, bedding and sheets and stuff,” said Faulkner. “We had them donated by our congregation. Food is supplied.”
Memphis City Schools will provide food to the shelters.
Faulkner says his church did the same thing three years ago during Hurricane Katrina, but this time they’re better prepared, ready to do everything they can to make sure their guests have a comfortable place to stay.

According to the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, almost all local hotels are full. And Tunica County hotels, motels and RV parks were already full as of Saturday afternoon.
The Red Cross is managing the shelters.
The following area shelters are now open:
Byrne High School, 1475 East Shelby Drive in Memphis
Catholic High School, 61 North McLean in Memphis
Cummings Street Baptist Church, 794 E. Raines Road in Memphis.
G.W. Henderson Receation Center, 1155 Abbey Drive, just off U.S. 61 in Tunica, Mississippi.
The Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help welcome Gulf Coast evacuees to the Mid-South. Volunteer sign-up and orientation will take place Sunday and Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Volunteers can sign up in person at 1400 Central Avenue in Memphis, or call 901-726-1690.

Great, another incoming crime wave.

To fucking decide when the lunch special ends? The lunch special is a very slightly smaller portion (I’m not even sure it’s smaller) with rice and an eggroll for $5-6. When the lunch special ends, the price effectively doubles. We ordered last week a couple of minutes before 3. The woman taking our order said that the lunch special ends at 2:30, but she would do it this time, just make sure to call before 2:30 in the future. Awesome, thanks! I just called 10 minutes ago, 2:12pm, and the woman taking my order said the lunch special was over. Uh, what? I said, “Last week the person taking orders said 2:30, she even let us order it a little before 3″. The woman on the phone replies with, “No, you’re wrong”. Mmmmkay, looks like I’m going to Huey’s. So if you order from them, I would suggest you do it before 11:00am, lest you miss the lunch special, whenever it ends that day.

I went to midtown to pick up some beer and decided I wanted to grab some BBQ on the way back downtown for dinner.? I went with TOPS on Union, because they’re consistent and it’s on the way home. I went with the regular pulled pork bbq sandwich with no slaw. It’s was basically the standard Memphis fare, which is to say, fucking awesome. This place is also crazy cheap for the amount of food you get; $10.38 for 2 regular bbq sandwich combos with fries, large drink, and bbq beans. Call ahead and they’ll have it ready for you.
