Mr zzzz: The problem is, it won't do much to restrict cheap alcohol access, a small bottle of cheap liquor isn't a lot more than a tall boy. Plus this would only apply to a small area, you could always walk a few blocks and buy a beer. Not to mention, public intoxication is already illegal, why not enforce that law before we make more?

I come from PA where you have three options to buy booze. You can buy 6 packs in a bar, cases of beer in a distributor and wine or spirits in state run liquor stores. The distributors and liquor stores are also only open until 10PM. I can tell you there are plenty of drunks in PA, so access is not the issue, but taking this restricted approach would dramatically impact cheap alcohol access. In PA, booze is the rich man's drug...hillbilly heroin (meth) and pot are the college kid and white trash drug of choice. Just some thoughts:)

Otto - I like being able to pick up a bomber of Dead Guy or Newcastle or whatever at Frank's. More to the point, it won't really do shit, you'll just see more bottles of Dark Eyes and other cheap liquors. I could tolerate the minor annoyance of not being able to buy a single serving beer if it were to actually do anything. I just don't see what this will accomplish other than giving people something to point to when asked if they're doing anything about the issue.

I don't have a problem with them banning sales of single beers. I see far too many 40's on the sidewalks, and if the bums have to walk out of downtown to get their malt liquor, then perhaps they just won't come back.

The legislation, as written, however, is slightly more encompassing:

It is unlawful for any beer or malt beverages to be sold, regardless of container size, in quantities of less than six (6) manufacturer pre-packaged multi-unit quantities per sale.

This upsets me because my cans of Guinness come in 4 packs.

However, the area in which sales will be prevented is highly limited. Basically, it's from just north of Auction Ave. down to Vance Ave. Everything outside that space is unaffected. Unfortunately, this includes Frank's Deli, where I do tend to pick up my beers, so that's annoying, but I can hop down to the BP and pick up beer there instead if I want my Guinness.
