If you’ve ever wanted to make homemade ice cream
Amazon has a sale on refurbed ice cream makers, $20 + shipping for a $99 machine. I might have to check it out, I need an excuse to eat ice cream.

I finally got around to trying Flying Fish last night after living within blocks for the entire year or so it’s been open. Since I’ve never eaten there, I decided to just go with their “specialty” and got the fried catfish fillet dinner with fries and hush puppies. I called in my order, walked down there, and it was ready. The catfish was about as good as fried catfish gets. It was surprisingly free of grease (as far as deep fried bottom feeders go). The fries were good, and didn’t have the fishy taste that everything in some fish places get. I wasn’t a big fan of the hush puppies, they were almost sweet, really strange. I’ll definitely eat there again, I’ll just sub something for the hush puppies. I was starving, and didn’t notice that my camera battery was completely dead until i got home with the food, and I sure as fuck wasn’t waiting. I’ll edit this post with a picture next time I get food there. In the meantime, here’s a stock image from their website.
And to me burger means Huey’s, so that’s where I went. I got the classic Hueyburger with cheddar, it was awesome as always. Highly suggested by me and basically everyone in Memphis, winning the Memphis Flyer’s best of Memphis award in the “Best Burger” category every year for roughly the last two decades, so I don’t see the need for a longwinded review.
I swear I’m going to get groceries this weekend.
I picked up a Cafe Supreme (Minus mushrooms, I don’t like their mushrooms for some reason) from Memphis Pizza Cafe for dinner. Pizza cafe is a little closer New York style than most places in the city, kind of a hybrid of that style and thin crust style. It’s always consistent, and tonight was no exception. At under $20 for a large supreme that will feed two hungry people at least twice, it’s one of my go-to things when I’m lazy and want a cheap easy meal.
To fucking decide when the lunch special ends? The lunch special is a very slightly smaller portion (I’m not even sure it’s smaller) with rice and an eggroll for $5-6. When the lunch special ends, the price effectively doubles. We ordered last week a couple of minutes before 3. The woman taking our order said that the lunch special ends at 2:30, but she would do it this time, just make sure to call before 2:30 in the future. Awesome, thanks! I just called 10 minutes ago, 2:12pm, and the woman taking my order said the lunch special was over. Uh, what? I said, “Last week the person taking orders said 2:30, she even let us order it a little before 3″. The woman on the phone replies with, “No, you’re wrong”. Mmmmkay, looks like I’m going to Huey’s. So if you order from them, I would suggest you do it before 11:00am, lest you miss the lunch special, whenever it ends that day.
I really need to go grocery shopping, but at least it’s giving me a ton of content
I went to midtown to pick up some beer and decided I wanted to grab some BBQ on the way back downtown for dinner. I went with TOPS on Union, because they’re consistent and it’s on the way home. I went with the regular pulled pork bbq sandwich with no slaw. It’s was basically the standard Memphis fare, which is to say, fucking awesome. This place is also crazy cheap for the amount of food you get; $10.38 for 2 regular bbq sandwich combos with fries, large drink, and bbq beans. Call ahead and they’ll have it ready for you.
Om nom nom.
I was feeling particularly lazy, so I ordered from Tucker’s for dinner tonight. Decent standard fare diner/pub grub. Their pizza is good too, but Black Diamond’s is better, so I never order pizza from them. The downside is that they’ve been wildly inconsistent in my experience, and they seem to take forever. My order took a little over an hour, and there were no burgers or steaks or anything with a cook time over 5 or 10 minutes.
Maybe two or three orders ago I decided to try their burger with a loaded baked potato and it kicked ass.
Like two weeks later, I repeated the same order. That time the burger was way overcooked and dry (I ordered it medium well), and the potato tasted like it had been under a heat lamp for 6 hours.
Check them out if you’re feeling adventureous, I just hope you catch them on a good day.
