A full review of the EeePC.

August 23, 2008 By: Sig Category: EeePC, Uncategorized 4 Comments →

I finally got everything set up and actually have the time to write a full review of this thing. I have to say, it’s probably the best electronics purchase I’ve made in a long time.

It’s hard to really appreciate how smallĀ  it is unless you see it compared to something of known size. Here’s the 10″ EeePC on my 17″ HP:

Since getting it, I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, and installed a vLite‘ed version of Vista. I plan to do a vLite tutorial soon. I also ordered a Western Digital 320GB hdd to replace the 80GB HDD that’s in it. All of this stuff can be found on my EeePC Amazon Store.

I was going to do a tutorial on replacing the ram, but if you’ve ever done anything at all to a computer, it’s simple it would be a waste of time. Take out two screws and you get this

Take the old ram out and put your new ram in. Reverse the direction of the screws. You’re done. You can also see that the HDD is right there, it should be just as easy to swap, if I run into any problems I’ll post about it. I should get my new drive Monday.

To get the computer to recognize the ram, you need to reboot and go into bios, check the ram, then save and exit. The quick boot function doesn’t poll the ram on every start.

The Windows Experience Index rates mine a 2.7, based on the “Gaming performance” score. The second lowest score is a 3.0.

I can’t speak for a full install of Vista, but the vlited copy I’m using runs flawlessly. Everything opens pretty much instantly with no lag at all. Streaming high res video from Hulu.com runs great. The touchpad software is pretty freaking cool, with multitouch features. I would suggest you go into mouse settings and disable the touchpad while keying, so you don’t accidentally move your cursor around, and I would also suggest you disable the two finger tap feature. Two finger scroll acts like a scroll wheel, which is awesome. Two finger tap acts like a middle click. This would be awesome if it didn’t frequently mistake an attempt to scroll as a click. Trust me, just turn it off. Also, the shift key on the right hand side is in an odd place, I used SharpKeys to swap it with the up arrow key, it works a lot better that way, in my opinion.

Here’s an actual resolution shot of my desktop, so you have an idea of the screen size:

Battery life is pretty amazing too. I have mine set to “high performance”, and I’ve been using it for about three hours today. It still estimates two hours left. It will go close to 8 on power saving mode.

I really can’t say enough good things about the 1000H. It would be a stretch to suggest it as an only computer, but it’s basically perfect as a mobile computer. Capable of 99% of the stuff of a “normal” laptop, while costing less and being much better suited to actually doing stuff away from home or the office. I typed part of this on my lunch break, tethered to my phone via the built in bluetooth.

Trust me, you want one.

I can’t even express how awesome the Eee is.

Seriously, the Eee PC 1000H has got to be the best portable device I’ve had the pleasure of using.

The size is pretty much perfect. It’s big enough to have a usable keyboard and screen, while still small enough to take anywhere.

Video looks great on it, performance is more than adequate, storage space is ample, as I barely use it anyway, opting to keep most stuff on an external or a server.

Would I like more RAM? Yes, yes I would. That’s why I bought a 2GB Stick. I’ll install it tomorrow and likely do a simple guide for noobs who have never swapped RAM.

Would I like a faster processor? Of course, that’s like asking if I would like more horsepower. The Intel Atom in the Eee deals with the intended purposes of a netbook flawlessly while getting amazing battery life.

In short, I think it’s fucking amazing. It so amazing it makes me want to punch an emu right in the face.

I’ve gotten a little more serious about EeePC stuff, as mine will finally be here monday. I set up an Amazon.com store and added a bunch of stuff. Check it out if you get a chance. Expect a full review and lots of pictures of the Eee monday night.

My EeePC is on the way, and I’m doing an amazon store for them.

I finally pulled the trigger on an Asus Eee PC 1000h. If all goes well, I’ll have tons of pics and a detailed review by Friday night.

I also decided to do an Amazon Store focused on EeePC’s and accessories. I’m going to build it up shortly, including all the accessories I buy for the EeePC. Right now it just had the model I bought.

Dear bitch walking out of Pembroke Square:

August 12, 2008 By: Sig Category: Memphis, rant No Comments →

Yes you; the bitch who, upon seeing me standing outside my building with both arms full of groceries, waiting on my girlfriend to come let me in, slammed the door shut and said “I can’t let you in!”. I hope you drown in a bucket of AIDS blood.

Did it ever occur to you that most people don’t break into apartments/rape and pillage/murder people with a load of groceries?

OH JEBUS! YOU’VE DISCOVERED MY MASTER PLAN! I WAS GOING TO BREAK INTO THESE APARTMENTS AND STOCK THE FUCK OUT OF THEIR KITCHENS, WHETHER THEY LIKE IT OR NOT!

Did it ever occur to you that you could say, “How can you prove that you live here?”, and I could show you my ID with the address on it, or tell you which magazine is in the stand by the elevators at Pembroke, or ask me what the button for the roof is labeled, or any number of things to prove I live there?

It was a much better plan of action to say “I can’t let you in!” and hastily walk away, ignoring me, and continuing your likely vapid phone conversation. I know that you’re very engrossed in who your mother is blowing, but you could take the time to not be a complete bitch.

You will die alone. You clearly lack social skills, and likely have a long history of failed relationships. Your only hope for stability is to trick some poor fuck into miraculously planting his (likely flawed) seed in that barren desert you call a womb. I hope everything bad in this world happens to you, and only to you.

Cunt. Cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt. Cunty McCunterberry, Mayor of Cuntsville.

I look forward to the day I see you struggling to carry in your groceries, so I can slam the door in your face and scream, “CUNT!”.

P.S. - I’m sorry for calling you a “Fucking Bitch”, I meant to say “Horrible cunt”.

Love,

Sig
